SGI-Canada Youth Support Tree Planting
On August 22, 2009, approximately 60 SGI-Canada youth members and friends participated in an annual tree planting activity held in Alton, Ontario, in collaboration with the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC).
Some 400 trees were planted on the CVC site within a few hours. A CVC coordinator commented that it would have taken the CVC staff about a week to plant the same number of trees. The trees will grow to 10 feet within five years, providing shade and support for flora and fauna in the area.
SGI-Canada youth have participated in the CVC-sponsored activity to help the environment since 2000. Each year, the number of SGI youth involved increases. With the activity, the young people have opportunities to get hands-on experience regarding proper tree planting technique and also learn about the importance of working together toward a common goal.
