Daisaku and Kaneko Ikeda Cherry Tree Grove Dedicated in Southern California, USA

On November 18, 2007, a dedication ceremony took place for Daisaku and Kaneko Ikeda Cherry Tree Grove, within the City of Torrance's Columbia Park. The grove is made up of cherry trees given to the city by the SGI-USA on behalf of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda and Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda. Torrance City Council member Bill Sutherland, standing in for Mayor Frank Scotto, led the dedication with some 200 residents attending. Also unveiled was a plaque praising the local SGI-USA members' efforts to enhance the "natural beauty of our community through the generosity of their wonderful gift," citing two lines from a poem penned by Mr Ikeda: "The spring breezes of good fortune, / Blow in the hearts of all."

The idea for the grove began in 2000, when SGI-USA member John Hoshi shared with Mr. Ikeda in a letter his wish to contribute to his community by planting ten cherry trees in Columbia Park. President Ikeda immediately responded with a commitment to plant 100 trees over ten years (later increased to 200 trees over 20 years).

Seventy cherry trees have been planted since 2001 and the grove will eventually comprise 200 trees by 2020. A team of local SGI-USA members tend to the trees monthly.
