SGI-Denmark held a training session in Helsingør from August 5-7 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's first visit to Denmark in October 1961. On August 6, as part of the training session, Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs Chair John Avery gave a lecture on abolishing war and nuclear weapons.

In his lecture, Mr. Avery emphasized the importance of the dignity of human life and how nuclear weapons pose a threat to this as well as to the environment. He also stated that those who base their actions upon humanism have a right and responsibility to fight for and lead the world toward peace.

Mr. Avery further stated, "We must replace the old world of international anarchy, chronic war, and institutionalized injustice by a new world of law. We also need a new global ethic, where loyalty to one's family and nation will be supplemented by a higher loyalty to humanity as a whole. SGI has shown us the way, with its dedicated work for education, peace, and nuclear abolition . . ."

The remainder of the training course included study sessions on the writings of Nichiren, such as "On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land" (WND p.6). Participants agreed that peace begins with treasuring friends and determined to become agents for positive change within their local communities.
