On June 25, 2010, SGI-New Zealand held a "Victory Over Violence" (VOV) workshop for 160 high school students from Reporoa College in New Zealand.

The workshop, initiated by youth, helps young people identify and counteract the root causes of violence in their lives and their communities and is coupled with a broader purpose of creating sustainable nonviolent cultures within schools and the wider society. The recent workshop was held in conjunction with the school's "Respect Week"--a program aimed at building awareness about the importance of respecting oneself and others in fostering a culture of nonviolence.

The first hour of the VOV workshop familiarized the students with the aims of VOV. Following this, brainstorm sessions were held during which students, and 16 peer mediators from Reporoa College, including staff, discussed action plans for promoting peace and dialogue within their schools and communities.
