Soka Gakkai Malaysia Selangor Organizes Forum on SGI President's Peace Proposal
On July 29, 2009, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Selangor organized a forum to present key points from SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's 2009 peace proposal entitled "Toward Humanitarian Competition: A New Current in History." Student representatives from SGM Selangor presented at the event.
In his peace proposal, Mr. Ikeda discusses the global economic crisis, questions humanity's abstract love of money and calls for a focus on the real needs of real people, stressing the importance of strengthening social safety nets. To resolve the crisis of capitalism, he also advocates a paradigm shift to "humanitarian competition," a concept first proposed by Soka Gakkai founder Tsunesaburo Makiguchi in 1903, in which nations and individuals compete to find means to contribute to global society. To make the current crisis a catalyst for change, he specifically calls for shared action to tackle global environmental problems, shared responsibility and international cooperation over global public goods, and shared efforts for peace through dialogue.
Approximately 1,000 SGM members and guests attended the forum, conducted in two separate sessions, one in English and in Chinese.
