"Transforming the Human Spirit" Festival Held in West Hollywood, California, USA
On July 12, 2009, some 500 SGI-USA members and guests participated in a festival titled "Transforming the Human Spirit" at West Hollywood's Plummer Park. The local SGI-USA organization sponsored the daylong event that featured panel discussions and SGI-USA's exhibition "From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit."
The morning panel featured several West Hollywood community leaders, including West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land, City Council members Lindsey Horvath and Jeffrey Prang, Carol Wells, executive director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, and Robert Boller, director of programs for Project Angel Food, as well as SGI-USA Women's Leader Linda Johnson.
In his opening remarks, SGI-USA West Territory Peace and Community Relations Director and panel moderator Danny Hall gave an overview of the exhibition and asked the panelists, "How have you used your art, work or faith values to bring about a transformation in your home, workplace or community?"
In addition to guest speakers representing various faiths and occupations, the afternoon panels also featured musical performances. Local SGI-USA Los Angeles leader Kathy Lucien stated, "This festival not only gave us the opportunity to share SGI's values with many people, it also allowed us to learn from the community."
