From May 23-29, 2009, SGI's exhibition "Building a Culture of Peace for the Children of the World" was shown at the Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida, USA. Prior to the show, three cities in Florida--Niceville, Fort Walton Beach and Crestview--declared May as "Culture of Peace Month" in celebration of the 49th anniversary of Daisaku Ikeda's inauguration as the third Soka Gakkai president on May 3, 1960, and in recognition of SGI's promotion of lasting peace.

During the exhibition's opening ceremony, Bill Garvie, Fort Walton Beach City deputy mayor, read a declaration commending SGI for fostering peace, culture and education through the transformation of the human spirit and for its contributions to the development of young people. SGI-USA members living on the Gulf Coast in which the three cities are located were also commended for their efforts to spread peace throughout their communities and to inspire youth to build healthy futures.
