SGI-USA Members in Texas Run for Peace

On September 20, 2008, SGI-USA members from the Dallas-Fort Worth West Area participated in the first annual Peace Race, which celebrated the United Nations' International Day of Peace.

About a dozen SGI-USA members participated in the run, and SGI-USA young men's member Brendan McKeever came in first for his age bracket.

The foot race benefited the Peace Alliance, a nonpartisan organization that supports the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace in the federal government. Under the proposal, which is presently a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives, the department would be headed by a Secretary of Peace and Nonviolence and appointed by the U.S. President with advice and consent of the Senate. The proposed mission of the department would be to consider peace as an organizing principle, promote justice and democracy to further human rights and develop policies that advance nonviolent strategies for conflict prevention and resolution.

An SGI booth offered an introduction to the SGI and its activities for peace, culture and education, as well as the life-affirming philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism practiced by SGI members. The SGI has been invited to participate in next year's event.
