Soka Gakkai Women's Peace Committee Sponsors "Culture of Peace Forum"
On July 1, 2008, the Soka Gakkai Women's Peace Committee (WPC) hosted a "Culture of Peace Forum" at the Soka Gakkai Higashimurayama Culture Center, Tokyo. In her opening remarks, WPC Vice Chair Nobuko Ishii expressed her wish that the forum would offer the participants opportunities to further reflect on what they can do as peacebuilders.
Speakers included Maria Ono, who expressed the satisfaction she gains through acting as an interpreter and coordinator for foreign students at Japanese schools. Mieko Yamashita, a nurse, shared how she came to feel deeply about the dignity of life through her experiences in Zambia as well as through working as an at-home caregiver. Noriko Ikegai spoke about her personal challenges as a mother of a daughter diagnosed with an incurable disease and Yoshiko Fuchino related her harsh war experience and how she became engaged in peace activities as a result of her Buddhist practice. Mayumi Haratani, who has endeavored to help establish a cord blood bank for the treatment of leukemia patients, and Ritsuko Chou, a painter, appealed to the audience to foster a culture of peace through the power and solidarity of women.
