Kansai Youth Peace Conference Hosts Antinuclear Seminar

On September 8, 2007, the Kansai Youth Peace Conference hosted a seminar--the seventh in a series--at the Soka Gakkai Kansai Culture Center in Osaka, Japan. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda's Declaration for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, keynote speaker Professor Osamu Ono of Doshisha University, Kyoto, spoke on "War or Peace--You Decide."

In his lecture, Professor Ono lauded Mr. Toda for his courage in condemning the use of nuclear weapons. He remarked that Mr. Toda's unwavering stance against the use of nuclear weapons in front of the tens of thousands of youth in 1957 in Yokohama must have been inspirational for the youth who would be shouldering responsibility for the future. Professor Ono then discussed the Pacific War from the cultural, religious, historic and ideological perspectives of Europe, the United States and Japan. He concluded his lecture by emphasizing that the key to peacebuilding lies in striving to better understand diverse cultures and customs.
