Youth Present Victory Over Violence Workshop at UN Headquarters
From August 16 to 18, 2006, ten SGI-USA youth members attended the third Annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA, which brought together 400 young people from around the world to listen to speakers such as Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Gillian Sorensen, former UN Assistant Secretary General and to hold discussions and workshops on themes related to the Millennium Development Goals.
The SGI-USA youth facilitated a workshop on "Victory Over Violence" (VOV)--a grassroots program promoting nonviolence initiated by SGI-USA--which attracted 60 participants. All present signed the VOV Pledge, promising to value their own lives, respect all life and inspire hope in others. The VOV workshop included a discussion on passive violence.
The Youth Assembly is sponsored annually by the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation and by nine permanent missions to the UN, including South Africa.
