On May 23, the Culture of Peace Resource Center opened in the SGI-USA headquarters building in Santa Monica, California. The center will be a hub for expanding an informational network and civil education to support the UN's culture of peace project based on the UN International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2000-2010). The center makes available books, documents and visual materials on the culture of peace, and visitors are able to build a global network through the Internet. Many guests attended the opening, including UN Under-Secretary-General Anwarul Karim Chowdhury and his wife, Mariam; and Maria Hellen Barber, consul of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles. On the occasion, the United Nations Association USA (UNA-USA) Pacific-Los Angeles Chapter commended SGI President Daisaku Ikeda, for his continuous support of the UN and its global peace efforts. UNA-USA Pacific-Los Angeles Chapter President Norma Foster entrusted a certificate to SGI-USA youth representatives.
