Soka Gakkai Malaysia Hosts Lecture on Multiculturalism

On March 7, 2009, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) organized a public lecture on multiculturalism at SGM Grand Culture Center in Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Syed Farid Alatas, associate professor and head of the Malay Studies Department at the National University of Singapore spoke on "Inter-Ethnic Relations and the Need for Multiculturalism in Malaysia." The lecture was chaired by S. Radhakrishnan of the Gandhi Memorial Trust. In his talk, Dr. Alatas first addressed inter-ethnic relations in Malaysia and the need to foster greater understanding of differences as well as the idea of multiculturalism. He then commented on the importance of education, stating, "We need to develop an education syllabus that reflects the contributions of all cultures and civilizations to the development of Malaysia." Some 130 attended the event.
