Human Rights Education Activities in Budapest and New York

From February 13-20, 2008, SGI's Geneva-based UN Liaison Officer Kazunari Fujii was invited to participate as an expert adviser in an evaluation seminar for the two-year Advanced Compass Training course in Human Rights Education (ACT-HRE) held at the Council of Europe's European Youth Centre in Budapest, Hungary. The seminar brought together more than 35 young ACT-HRE participants who brought their projects on human rights education (HRE) for evaluation among themselves and the four expert advisers. Mr. Fujii contributed to the evaluation of two projects, one on cultural relativism and HRE and the other aimed at creating a national civil society network for HRE in Portugal. He also moderated a workshop on HRE at the international level. The COMPASS manual for human rights education promoted by the Council of Europe has now been translated into 33 different languages.

From February 28-March 1, Mr. Fujii participated in meetings of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO) at the Church Center near the UN Headquarters in New York City. He spoke on issues related to human rights education and learning currently being taken up by NGOs at the UN during an interactive dialogue session and at the March 1 CONGO board meeting gave a report as chair of the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning.
