Soka Gakkai and SGI Organizations Continue Earthquake Relief Donations

In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that hit the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11, Soka Gakkai and SGI organizations around the world continue to make donations in support of relief efforts.

On March 31, Kazuo Nirasawa, the regional leader of Soka Gakkai in Tohoku, and  Akihiko Morishima, Soka Gakkai Miyagi prefectural leader, visited the Miyagi prefectural government and presented a check for 100 million yen (US$1.2 million) to Miyagi Prefectural Governor Yoshihiro Murai in support of relief efforts. Mr. Murai thanked Soka Gakkai for the donation and for offering its facilities as shelters for those affected by the earthquake and tsunamis. Soka Gakkai also donated 100 million yen (US$1.2 million) to Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture, 150 million yen (US$1.8 million) each to Iwate and Fukushima Prefectures, 30 million yen (US$360,000) to Ibaraki Prefecture, and 10 million yen (US$121,000) to Chiba Prefecture.

On March 30, SGI-Switzerland General Director Massimo Marazzi met with Swiss Solidarity representative Paolo Rimoldi to deliver a donation of CHF$10,000 (US$10,800) toward the organization's relief fund. Swiss Solidarity is channeling the funds it raises for Japan through organizations such as ADRA, Caritas, the Swiss Red Cross and the Salvation Army and their Japanese partner organizations, to help provide drinking water, hot meals, cooking utensils, blankets and tarpaulins for evacuees.

From March 14-31, SGI centers throughout Hong Kong collected earthquake relief donations for Japan. A donation of HK$1,871,489.30 (US$240,650) was made to the Hong Kong Red Cross on April 1, in addition to an initial donation of HK$200,000 (US$ 25,655) given to the Hong Kong Red Cross on March 16.
