Hope in Action: SSA Students Hold Online Photo Documentary Challenge

For its annual June project, Singapore Soka Association (SSA)'s student group organized a 30-day photo documentary initiative titled "30 Days of Human Revolution (HR30)" calling for participants to create and document expressions of hope in action in their local communities. Whether it be picking up a piece of trash, offering their seat to a senior citizen on the train or putting away their phone to engage a stranger in conversation, students from various colleges captured such gestures made by themselves or others and shared them on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to further inspire their friends to action.

The initiative, which was also themed "Treasure Everything," aimed to help students actively apply the Buddhist ideals of human revolution (inner transformation) and opening their heart to others to their daily realities. It was inspired by a passage from SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's 2013 peace proposal in which he writes, "the key to creating a global society of peace and creative coexistence is to share the joy and suffering of others."

On June 8, as part of HR30, some 70 student members from Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic, together with men’s and women’s members, participated in a charity drive called the "3M Step-Up Challenge@ South East" at the Senja Soka Centre which involved keep fit exercises and climbing several flights of stairs. For every 100 steps taken, the campaign--organized by 3M Singapore and the government--a set of stationery items would be donated to a student from a low income family. SSA participants achieved a total of 75,888 steps, which equated to 758 sets of stationery donated.

The HR30 project culminated in a youth forum on Mr. Ikeda's 2013 peace proposal and an exhibition of selected photographs at the SSA Headquarters on June 16. Some 500 students and friends of SSA attended the event, including Baey Yam Keng, Member of Parliament for the Tampines Group Representation Constituency (GRC), and Kelvin Thong, Group Constituency Director. Mr. Thong commented, "The little yet significant actions of neighborliness and caring for one another showcased in the exhibition are an important value we must treasure … [they] remind us that we do not need to do big things to celebrate the existence of these important values in our daily lives."

The photo documentary project can be viewed on Facebook and Instragram.
