Singapore Soka Association Holds First Community Mental Health Symposium

On September 25, Singapore Soka Association (SSA) held its inaugural Community Mental Health Symposium at the SSA Headquarters. The event was co-organized with Silver Ribbon Singapore and the World Federation for Mental Health. Approximately 400 attended the event.

The symposium presented a series of talks and workshops addressing issues such as women's mental health, building awareness in the community about suicide and the role of religion and faith in mental health.

The therapeutic role of art in helping people struggling with mental illness was also discussed. Artworks by recovering patients from the Simei Care Centre, a psychiatric rehabilitation center, were displayed.

Guests included Hawazi Daipi, senior parliamentary secretary for Ministry of Health. Mr. Daipi expressed his appreciation to SSA and other community organizations that have worked together to promote understanding of mental health issues and educated the public on the various services available for those struggling with mental illness.

The symposium was supported by the Health Promotion Board and included the following participating organizations: Asian Women's Welfare Association, Institute of Mental Health, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, SAGE Counseling Centre, Singapore Association for Mental Health, Simei Care Centre, Samaritans of Singapore, Tampines Family Service Centre and Allswell Trading Pte Ltd.
