SGI-Hong Kong and SGI-Macau Make Financial Donations for Mudslide Relief in China
Both SGI-Hong Kong and SGI-Macau have contributed humanitarian funds in response to mudslides caused by torrential rains that hit Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, China, on August 8, 2010.
SGI-Hong Kong donated HK$200,000 (about US$27,500) to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on August 23. The check was presented to UNICEF's 2010 Gansu Mudslides Appeal by SGI representatives. In return, UNICEF Hong Kong Committee Member Leonie Ki and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Leon Lai presented a letter of appreciation to SGI-Hong Kong Women's Leader Wo Wai Kuen who received it on behalf of all the members of SGI-Hong Kong.
On August 12, SGI-Macau General Director Lei Loi Tak presented a check of MOP$200,000 (about US$27,500) to Macau Red Cross President Wong Yue Lai, also for mudslide relief.
The Gansu Province mudslides forced thousands of people to flee their homes and have resulted in over 1,400 deaths with many people missing.
