On January 20, 2009, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) made a contribution of RM 18,000 to the SAHABAT-PPUKM (Friends of PPUKM) Fund at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (PPUKM), which provides financial assistance to patients in need. SGM General Director Choo Kong Fei presented the check to Professor Dato Dr. Lokman Saim, dean and director of PPUKM. Part of SGM's contribution came from the proceeds of a flea market held at the SGM Culture Center in Cheras in December 2008. SAHABAT-PPUKM was set up in 1998 with the aim of mobilizing volunteers to assist in patient care.

On January 11, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Johor Bahru Chapter presented SGM Johor with a certificate of appreciation for its humanitarian efforts and contributions to the community over the years. SGM Johor youth members performed various dances at the ceremony in celebration of the commendation.
