SGI Celebrates Soka Gakkai Men's Day

Harlem, New YorkHarlem, New York

In August, SGI men across the world gathered to celebrate Soka Gakkai Men's Division Day (August 24), which is also the day SGI President Daisaku Ikeda joined the Soka Gakkai in 1947 at the age of 19. The Men's Division itself was founded on March 5, 1966.

SGI men held general meetings to celebrate the day in countries including the US, Argentina, Brazil, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. At the meetings they shared experiences in faith and personal determinations. In some countries such as Argentina, participants also studied the history of the founding of the Soka Gakkai's Men's Division.

In the US, from August 24-26, SGI men's and young men's group members held local gatherings at various locations across the country, including Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, New York, Denver and Texas. A total of more than 9,000 people joined the meetings. Mr. Ikeda sent a message on the occasion of the meetings, calling on the men to courageously take action for change in their workplaces and communities.

Fundraising for ShelterBoxFundraising for ShelterBox

On August 26, SGI-UK men from Cornwall in the southwest of England came together to mark the occasion by organizing and taking part in a sponsored bike ride to raise money for the Cornwall-based international charity ShelterBox. The charity delivers emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies to people displaced by man-made or natural disasters. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami, ShelterBox sent over 1,600 survival kits to those affected by the disaster. To express their solidarity with Tohoku Soka Gakkai members, the men created a banner carrying the slogan "Don't Give Up" in English and Japanese. Along with a number of women SGI-UK members, friends and neighbors, the men cycled from Wadebridge to Padstow, raising nearly GBP600 for ShelterBox.
