New Year's meetings to celebrate the start of 2011 were held in Soka Gakkai centers throughout Japan on January 1 and 2.

On January 1, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda and Soka Gakkai representative leaders performed gongyo at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Shinanomachi, Shinjuku, Tokyo, to pray for the good health, happiness and success of all SGI members around the world in what has been designated "The Year of Capable People and Dynamic Development." In a message to Soka Gakkai members throughout Japan, Mr. Ikeda quoted the words of Nichiren: "Gold can be neither burned by fire nor corroded or swept away by water, but iron is vulnerable to both. A worthy person is like gold, a fool like iron." President Ikeda said that no matter how turbulent the current age may be, a wise person who upholds the Lotus Sutra should never be defeated in life. Winning over life's adversities, he continued, allows one to become happy, and faith is the impetus for achieving victory.

On the same day, Soka Gakkai President Minoru Harada participated in a New Year meeting held at the Josho Center in Shinjuku, Tokyo, together with members and leaders from the area. President Harada urged the participants to be courageous at heart and help usher in a new age in whatever situation they find themselves.
