Lectures on Nichiren Buddhism in Milan, Italy

SGI-Europe members Participants studying the philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism in Milan, Italy

From July 14-17, some 470 SGI members from 29 countries around Europe attended SGI-Europe's Nichiren Buddhism study session in Milan, Italy. SGI Study Department Chief Katsuji Saito lectured on key writings of Nichiren such as "The True Aspect of All Phenomena" and on the mentor-disciple relationship, which he depicted as the essence of Nichiren Buddhism. Mr. Saito drew on the life of Nichiren's follower Shijo Kingo as an example of the spirit of the mentor-disciple relationship. Shijo Kingo overcame many difficulties based on the guidance and encouragement contained in the 22 letters he received from Nichiren.

This, the ninth SGI-Europe Nichiren Buddhism study session, is especially pertinent to SGI-Europe members as they have been holding special meetings to study and discuss the writings of Nichiren in the buildup to October 2011, the 50th anniversary of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's first visit to Europe.

Mr. Ikeda sent a message in which he encouraged participants to live life based on faith and courage, and in his speech SGI-Europe Chair Hideaki Takahashi called on participants, the majority of whom were youth division representatives, to work for the betterment of society.
