SGI-Haiti Holds First District Meeting in Wake of Earthquake
On January 24, 2010, the first district discussion meeting was held in Port-au-Prince, Haiti since the deadly earthquake that hit on January 12. The meeting included prayers for the repose of the victims of the earthquake and for the speedy recovery of the injured.
In a message to the SGI members in Haiti, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda sent his heartfelt prayers. Participants at the meeting commented that being able to encourage each other gave them hope.
On the same day, SGI-Dominican Republic held a meeting in Dajabón. An SGI-Haiti Men's Chapter Leader, Mr. Pierre Niaud, attended. In the aftermath of the earthquake SGI-Dominican Republic members have provided emergency aid such as food, medical and relief supplies to Haitians. Mr. Niaud stated that encouragement from Mr. Ikeda, as well as from SGI-Dominican Republic members, has given SGI-Haiti members great hope and courage in the wake of their country's devastation. He thanked all those around the world who have sent and continue to send prayers. Lastly, Mr. Niaud reported that SGI-Haiti members have made strong determinations to be victorious in their lives, changing "poison into medicine."
