SGI Members Around the World Celebrate the New Year
From January 1-2, 2010, Soka Gakkai members throughout Japan held commemorative New Year meetings. 2010 marks the 80th year since the establishment of the Soka Gakkai on November 18, 1930, under the leadership of first Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi.
Gatherings included the reading of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's message, musical performances, and the sharing of faith-based experiences. The events provided opportunities for participants to renew their determination to deepen their understanding of the mentor-disciple relationship and to determine to make dynamic advancements in life, impart hope and courage, gain trust in their communities and advance lasting world peace.
Similarly, on January 1, SGI-Panama members commemorated the New Year with a meeting at the SGI-Panama Culture Center. Messages from SGI President Ikeda and Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda were read. Representatives shared their personal determinations for 2010. SGI-Panama General Director Gabriel Martínez Garcés spoke about the history of the Soka Gakkai, stating that 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of SGI President Ikeda's inauguration as the third Soka Gakkai president and his first visit abroad to encourage SGI members. Mr. Martínez emphasized the importance of supporting youth so they realize their full potential as future leaders in society. The meeting concluded with a dance and music performances by members of all ages.
