SGI Young Women's Day Celebrated in Uruguay and Canada

On July 25, 2010, a Young Women's General Meeting was held at the SGI-Uruguay Culture Center in Montevideo, Uruguay. The meeting was held in commemoration of SGI Young Women's Day (July 19). Approximately 50 attended.

The meeting included a music performance and one participant shared with others how she was able to break through deadlock and transform her life for the better through prayer and taking courageous action. SGI-Uruguay Young Women's Leader Silvia Gómez shared how she believed strongly that each and every person has a unique, irreplaceable mission in life. She encouraged the young women to continue expanding their lives together with their mentor and to create a life filled with happiness.

During the month of July, young women throughout Canada also celebrated the founding of the SGI Young Women's Group. Meetings were held in several cities, including Ontario, Toronto and Vancouver. Approximately 300 participated.

On July 11 and 24, young women held meetings in Quebec City and Montreal. Both meetings focused on the theme of “Realizing Your Dreams and Goals” and included exercises from a curriculum called REACH, which has been developed by SGI-Canada and "Me to We," a social enterprise that runs leadership programs for youth. The curriculum aims to foster "Respect, Empower, Action, Courage and Hope" and to empower youth to make a difference in society. It covers such topics as trust building, relationships, dealing with disappointment, self-identity and dialogue.

Presentations and discussion groups were also held where participants discussed the vital role women play in society and deepened their understanding of the mentor and disciple relationship.
