On November 29, 2009, 180,000 candidates at 1,669 venues throughout Japan took either the Elementary-Level Study Exam or the Level 3 Youth Study Exam. The exams aim to encourage members to broaden their understanding of Buddhism.

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda sent a message to all examinees and staff members that was read at each exam site. Mr. Ikeda emphasized that within the Soka Gakkai the study exam is not solely about passing or failing, but the exam and the efforts leading up to it serve the purpose of nurturing "professors of happiness, justice, life and victory."

The study exam focused on Nichiren's writings titled "On Repaying Debts of Gratitude," "Letter from Sado" and "Letter to the Brothers." Examinees were also questioned on the Buddhist concepts of "the three obstacles and four devilish functions," as well as the fundamentals of Nichiren Buddhism.
