On October 10, 2009, SGI-Portugal held a national training session for leaders in Lisbon, Portugal. Some 130 participated, including members who traveled from the Portuguese archipelago of Azores.

The formation of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Norte Chapters was announced at the meeting as well as new appointments of area leaders.

The creation of the SGI-Portugal Soka Group, a young men's activity support group, was also reported at the meeting. New Soka Group Leader José Galinha shared his resolve to be victorious in both his daily life and his efforts to support SGI-Portugal activities, based on the harmonious unity of "many in body, one in mind" and the shared commitment of mentor and disciple.

At the training session, SGI-Europe Executive Advisor Shoichi Hasegawa and SGI-Europe Vice Women's Leader Betty Mori spoke about a leader's attitude and the importance of heartfelt dialogue in conveying the true spirit of Nichiren Buddhism.

On October 11, meetings throughout Lisbon commemorated the establishment of the new chapters; 100 members attended events held throughout the day.
