SGI-Panama Holds Commemorative Meeting

On March 29, 2009, some 900 SGI-Panama members and their friends gathered at SGI-Panama Culture Center to celebrate the 35th anniversary of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's first visit to the Republic of Panama. During the commemorative meeting, SGI-Panama's musical band and fife-and-drum corps, Banda Musical Gloria, performed. SGI-Panama youth representatives shared their determination to work diligently for building peace.

When Mr. Ikeda visited Panama in March 1974, he met with then President of Panama Demetrio B. Lakas and the Chancellor of the University of Panama, as well as encouraging pioneer and youth SGI members. He again visited Panama in 1981 and 1987. For many years, SGI-Panama, led by its educators' division, has hosted exhibitions and lectures on first Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's Soka kyoikugaku taikei (System of Value-Creating Pedagogy). Their activities were recognized as a "contribution to cultural and educational development," when SGI-Panama received the Manuel José Hurtado Award from Panama's Ministry of Education in December 2008. The Ministry's highest award is named for Panama's "father of public education."
