On and around March 20, 2009, day of the spring equinox, Soka Gakkai held memorial services to pray for the repose and happiness of deceased family members and friends at major Soka Gakkai centers and memorial parks throughout Japan, including Kansai Ikeda Memorial Park in Hyogo Prefecture and Hitachi Peace Memorial Park in Ibaraki Prefecture.

On March 20, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda led prayers at the Tokyo Makiguchi Memorial Hall in Hachioji, Tokyo. Together with representative members, he honored the memory of deceased ancestors and fellow members and deeply prayed for lasting peace, happiness and good fortune for all members, their families and friends.

On the same day, Soka Gakkai President Minoru Harada led prayers at the Soka Gakkai Shinjuku Culture Center in Tokyo. Quoting a passage from Nichiren's writing "On Offerings for Deceased Ancestors," which states, "The Venerable Maudgalyayana put his faith in the Lotus Sutra, which is the greatest good there is, and thus not only did he himself attain Buddhahood, but his father and mother did so as well," Mr. Harada expressed his desire that everyone fulfill their unique and precious mission in this lifetime.
