On February 16, 2009, commemorative prayer meetings in honor of Nichiren's birth (February 16, 1222) were held at Soka Gakkai centers in Japan and other venues around the world. SGI President Daisaku Ikeda led prayers at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Shinanomachi, Tokyo, in celebration of the day and paid tribute to Nichiren, recalling his life of great compassion to alleviate human suffering. Soka Gakkai President Minoru Harada and representatives of the Tokyo metropolitan area attended a prayer service at the Soka Culture Center in Shinanomachi, Tokyo.

Referring to Mr. Ikeda's recent lecture about "On the Buddha's Prophecy," one of Nichiren's writings, Mr. Harada stressed that it was Nichiren who actualized Shakyamuni Buddha's prophecy that stated Buddhism would spread in the "latter day of the law," and that the Soka Gakkai has realized Nichiren's prophecy that Buddhism's life-affirming philosophy would spread throughout the world. Today, SGI's global network includes members in 192 countries and territories, all sharing a common vision for building peace in society.
