SGI-Portugal Officially Registered

SGI-Portugal was recently officially registered as a religious organization. Sueji Naohara was appointed SGI-Portugal's general director. When SGI President Daisaku Ikeda first visited Portugal in 1965, there were no members in the country. An SGI chapter was established in Portugal in January 1992. Since then, the Portuguese members have worked together to expand understanding and support of the SGI's movement for peace through grassroots dialogues. The SGI-Portugal membership has grown 23 times in 17 years. The organization is now comprised of four chapters. In February 2003, many came to see the SGI's "World Boys and Girls Art Exhibition" held in Maia City, northern Portugal, including local students and distinguished guests.

Mr. Ikeda sent a congratulatory message in which he praised the members' steady and tenacious efforts over the years to promote peace and justice in society through one-on-one exchanges. Mr. Naohara and Women's Leader Hiroko Azevedo expressed their resolve to continue encouraging each member to contribute to society as exemplary citizens and to develop SGi-Portugal into a harmonious and joyful organization of capable individuals.
