SGI Associations in Hong Kong, Macao, Philippines, Bolivia and Brazil Promote Study of Nichiren Buddhism

On September 22, 2008, SGI-Hong Kong held a study conference on Nichiren Buddhism with SGI-Asia Study Department Chief Masaaki Morinaka at the SGI-Hong Kong Culture Center. Those who attended are scheduled to return to their respective areas to share with local members what they gained from their study of "The World of Nichiren Daishonin's Writings--A Discussion on Humanistic Religion," a dialogue conducted by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda and Soka Gakkai Study Department leaders.

Referring to Mr. Ikeda's lecture on "On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime," one of Nichiren's writings, Mr. Morinaka emphasized that a spirit of not begrudging one's life is paramount to unleashing and developing one's innate unlimited potential. He also pointed out that Nichiren demonstrated this principle through his own example and urged his disciples never to give up in the face of obstacles, emphasizing that endeavors based on a shared commitment of mentor and disciple toward the peace and happiness of all people will enable each of us to establish an unshakable happiness in our own lives.

On September 21, SGI-Macau held a leaders training session at its culture center. Participants studied "On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime," together with SGI-Hong Kong Study Department Chief Terrio Sun Po Loi. Mr. Sun stressed that everyone inherently possesses great potential for positive transformation that in turn enables each of us to overcome any difficulty. One's firm conviction and challenge to bring about this inner transformation results in positive changes in one's environment.

On September 28, SGI-Philippines held examinations on Nichiren Buddhism for entrance and elementary levels at venues in Manila, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu. Some 1,050 entrance and 550 elementary level candidates participated. They were tested on basic concepts of Nichiren Buddhism and some of Nichiren's writings. On the same day, SGI-Bolivia held a study examination for members who previously passed elementary and intermediate level exams at six cities throughout the country. The candidates were questioned extensively on their knowledge and understanding of Nichiren's writings, basic concepts of Nichiren Buddhism and Nichiren's life.

SGI-Brazil hosted examinations for entrance and elementary-levels on September 21 at 321 venues throughout the country. Over 12,000 candidates sat for the exams. Study material for the entrance-level exam included Nichiren's "Letter from Sado" and major events in Nichiren's life. The elementary-level exams were based on three of Nichiren's writings: "On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land," "On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime" and "On the Buddha's Prophecy."
