On April 28, 2008, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda attended a commemorative service to mark the 755th anniversary of the establishment of Nichiren Buddhism (April 28, 1253), at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters Annex in Shinanomachi, Tokyo. Together with Soka Gakkai representative leaders, he paid deep tribute to Nichiren for his lifetime dedication to people's happiness based on a profound view of the interconnectedness and eternity of life, all the while enduring persecutions.

On the same day, Soka Gakkai President Minoru Harada and General Director Masaaki Masaki along with representative members attended a gathering also at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Shinanomachi. President Harada quoted Nichiren's words and emphasized that the SGI is an organization in accord with Nichiren's original spirit and whose members are exerting themselves to promote lasting peace and happiness throughout the world. Today, SGI members are practicing Nichiren Buddhism in 192 countries and territories around the world. Commemorative prayer services were held at Soka Gakkai centers and other venues in many countries around the world.
