New SGI Culture Center Opens in Davao City, Philippines
On January 20, 2008, the new SGI-Philippines Davao Culture Center opened in Davao City, the largest city on Mindanao Island in the Philippines. The SGI organization in southern Mindanao began with just a few individuals 40 years ago and has now grown into three chapters and one general chapter. Local SGI members worked together with builders in a spirit of bayanihan (unity and mutual support in Tagalog) to construct the new center.
Davao City Councilor Pilar C. Braga attended the opening and gave a congratulatory address. She expressed her hope that the center will help further the development of peace and culture in southern Mindanao. SGI-Philippines Southern Mindanao General Chapter Chief Justino C. Figuracion Jr. and SGI Director Masatoshi Konno, visiting from Japan, each spoke. A cultural festival followed the opening ceremony and featured a performance by the SGI-Philippines fife-and-drum corps.
