New SGI Culture Center Opens in Davao City, Philippines

On January 20, 2008, the new SGI-Philippines Davao Culture Center opened in Davao City, the largest city on Mindanao Island in the Philippines. The SGI organization in southern Mindanao began with just a few individuals 40 years ago and has now grown into three chapters and one general chapter. Local SGI members worked together with builders in a spirit of bayanihan (unity and mutual support in Tagalog) to construct the new center.

She expressed her hope that the center will help further the development of peace and culture in southern Mindanao. SGI-Philippines Southern Mindanao General Chapter Chief Justino C. Figuracion Jr. and SGI Director Masatoshi Konno, visiting from Japan, each spoke. A cultural festival followed the opening ceremony and featured a performance by the SGI-Philippines fife-and-drum corps.
