Nichiren's Birth Anniversary Celebrated

February 16 is the birthday of Nichiren (1222-1282), the founder of the school of Buddhism on which the SGI bases its activities. Commemorative prayer services celebrating Nichiren's birth together with renewed pledges to work for humanity's happiness and lasting peace were held on this day at Soka Gakkai community centers and other venues in many countries around the world.

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda led a service at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters annex in Shinanomachi, Tokyo. Participants recalled Nichiren's selfless dedication to championing the cause of ordinary people and elucidating a path of happiness for all human beings.

Soka Gakkai President Minoru Harada and General Director Masaaki Masaki attended a prayer meeting with representatives at the Soka Culture Center in Shinanomachi, Tokyo. Mr. Harada remarked that SGI members throughout the world were celebrating Nichiren's birthday and stated that the first, second and third Soka Gakkai presidents have endeavored to live in accord with Nichiren's pledge to alleviate human suffering and enable people to tap and develop their potential. Their efforts to widely disseminate the philosophy and practice of Nichiren Buddhism have resulted in the SGI's steady growth.
