Seikyo Shimbun Holds Grand 55th Anniversary Reception

On January, 26, 2006, the Seikyo Shimbun, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this April, hosted a reception commemorating the occasion in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. Over 1,700 guests, including those from the media and foreign embassies, were welcomed by Soka Gakkai President Einosuke Akiya, General Director Toru Aoki, Vice General Director Minoru Harada and Seikyo Shimbun Board Chair Koji Harada. At the reception, Mr. Akiya conveyed SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's message of appreciation and thanked the guests for their attendance and continued support of the Seikyo Shimbun. Mr. Akiya stated that the Seikyo Shimbun takes pride in its mission as a newspaper that always provides ordinary people with hope and courage. He expressed hopes that the Seikyo Shimbun will endeavor to contribute to develop peace and culture with the power of the "printed word."

The newspaper began in 1951 as a twice weekly two-page paper with a circulation of 5,000. Today, the Seikyo Shimbun has grown into a 12-page daily with a circulation of 5.5 million.
