SGI-Brazil Education Department Holds Commencement Ceremony for Literacy Program Graduates

A graduate receives her certificate

Since 1987, SGI-Brazil (BSGI) Education Department has promoted a literacy program for adults. The original objective was to help illiterate BSGI members learn to read and write, but other people in the local communities are also welcome to attend the classes. Each course is 40 hours long. The work is done by teachers, monitors and assistants, who are all volunteers and members of BSGI. Students who complete the course receive a certificate equivalent to finishing elementary school, approved by states or cities. Some 125 students received certificates at a commencement ceremony during November and December 2004 at 25 locations throughout Brazil.
