Forty Years of Soka Gakkai Book Donations Celebrated

Takae Elementary and Junior High SchoolThe book donation ceremony at Takae Elementary and Junior High School on Feb. 5

In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the start of the Soka Gakkai's elementary and junior high school book donation initiative, Soka Gakkai donated 300 books each to 3 schools in Okinawa Prefecture. The schools, Takae Elementary and Junior High School in Higashi Village, Irabu Elementary School in Miyakojima City and Ohara Junior High School in Taketomi City, were the same schools that received books at the launch of the campaign in February 1974. Located on Iriomote Island, Ohara Junior High School's library provides the only public access to books on the island, which has no book store or public library.

The Soka Gakkai book donation initiative focuses on providing books ranging from masterpieces of literature to popular works to schools located in remote and rural areas and those that have been devastated in natural disasters. To date, some 480,000 books have been donated to more than 1,110 schools.
