Education Counseling Training Course and Youth Friendship Exchange held in Taiwan
On Jan 23 and 24, a National Education Counseling Training Course was held at the Taiwan Soka Association (TSA) Hua-Shan Culture Center in Yunlin County. Some 130 members of TSA's Academics and Education Group attended.
Keynote speakers included: Dr. Der-Hsiang Huang, director general of the Professional Development in the Education Department of Da-Yeh University; Professor Feng-Tsu Liao, former director of the Graduate Institute of Guidance and Counseling at National Kaohsiung Normal University; and Associate Professor Wang Hui-Yu from the General Education Center in Vanung University. Their remarks focused on the power of empathy and the usefulness of counseling for adolescents and parents.
TSA opened Education Counseling Rooms in its community centers throughout Taiwan since September, 2010, providing counseling services focused on parenting. More than 200 teachers from the Academics and Education Group have taken part in the program.
On January 27, a "Cross-Straits Youth Friendship Exchange" took place at TSA's Yu-cheng Community Center, led by Mr. Chen Cun Bao, vice director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs of Peking University. A total of some 30 students from Peking University, Yunnan University, and National Taiwan University engaged in an exchange together with more than 40 TSA student members.
A documentary featuring the volunteer work of students from the three universities in Yunnan Province, China, and Taiwan was shown. Students from Peking University and Yunnan University also shared their experiences of working on a project offering community services to rural areas. TSA youth spoke about their annual Soka Joy Summer Camp, a student-led initiative aimed at promoting education in remote areas of Taiwan.
Earlier in the day, the students visited an exhibition titled "The Lotus Sutra--A Message of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence" on display in TSA's Zhi Shan Culture Center.
