Singapore Soka Association Hosts Lecture on Importance of Literature
"Fiction, Imagination and the Surprises they Bring" was the theme of the seventh Singapore Soka Association's Student Peace Lecture held at Singapore Management University on December 12. Writer Suchen Christine Lim, the 1992 Singapore Literature Prize winner, attended as guest lecturer. Some 300 people attended.
In her talk, Ms. Lim shared SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's analogy that reading a great book is like encountering a great teacher and emphasized the importance of reading and its ability to activate our imagination. She shared her belief that the ability to be imaginative is directly linked to how one interacts with others, experiences empathy and is able to embrace another's point of view. The lecture was followed with a question and answer session.
