Soka Gakkai Education Department Commemorates Makiguchi's Birth
In honor of the 140th anniversary of the birth of first Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (June 6, 1871), the Soka Gakkai Education Department hosted a commemorative lecture at the Seikyo Shimbun head office on June 5. The Makiguchi Foundation for Education sponsored the event. Professor Masahiro Arimoto of Tohoku University lectured on the theme "Soka Education and Educational Reform in the 21st Century."
Professor Arimoto first spoke about Makiguchi's distinction between objective recognition of fact and subjective evaluation, comparing this to contemporary theories of educational assessment. He also discussed the relationship between Makiguchi's theory of value which encourages the growth and development of teachers, both personally and professionally, and present-day educational practices that stress organized learning and management.
Soka Gakkai Education Department Chief Hajime Miyamoto noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai Education Department's founding and spoke about the importance of the humanistic education that Mr. Makiguchi established and which has been further developed by Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda, the second and third presidents of the Soka Gakkai.
