Campinas City Honors SGI-Brazil

Campinas City, Brazil, honored SGI-Brazil with its Diploma of Merit for the organization's contributions to advancing peace and promoting human rights. At an awards ceremony held on October 28, SGI-Brazil also received the Darcy Ribeiro Educational Merit Award on behalf of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda for his efforts to promote culture and education and an honorary citizenship from Campinas City for Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda.


The Darcy Ribeiro Educational Merit Award is named after anthropologist, writer and politician Darcy Ribeiro (1922-97) of the University of Rio de Janeiro. This award is given to those who have made significant contributions to the development of education and culture.

Professor Ribeiro was an honorary executive committee member of the SGI exhibition "Toward a Century of Hope: Environment and Development" which was shown as an official side event of the Rio Earth Summit. He was also a great admirer of Mr. Ikeda's philosophy and activities for peace.

At the ceremony, Campinas City Council Member Thiago Ferrari and Professor Mohamed Habib, head of the Community Affairs Department at the State University of Campinas, attended. Mr. Ferrari expressed his appreciation for Mr. and Mrs. Ikeda's dedicated efforts toward advancing peace, creating a humanistic society and uniting people.
