On July 3 and 4, 2008, Taiwan Soka Association (TSA) sponsored "Soka Joy Summer Camps" at Green Island Elementary School in Taitung County and Tai-ba-lang Elementary School in Hualien County, Taiwan. The schools, both of which share limited educational resources, are located in rural areas--one on a remote island and the other in the mountains.

TSA college students volunteered their time as camp counselors, creating a joyful, educational and productive summer experience for the children, which included math, history, geography and sustainable environment workshops, athletic events, dances and games.

During the camp on July 3, TSA donated books written by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda for children and young adults to both schools and to the townships in which the schools are located, Guangfu Shiang Township and Ludao Shiang Township. The schools each conferred certificates of appreciation to Mr. Ikeda and TSA. Both the Guangfu Shiang Township Office and Ludao Shiang Township Office also commended Mr. Ikeda for his leadership of the SGI and TSA for its contributions to society.
