SGI-Panama Education Division and Education Agency Cosponsor Seminar for Teachers
From February 26 to March 2, 2007, the SGI-Panama Education Division collaborated with the Central Panama Region Teachers Training Program of the Panama Ministry of Education on "Values for the Third Millennium," a practical, hands-on seminar at the Ernesto T. Lefevre School. The event for teachers was part of the Makiguchi in Action Project based on the pedagogy of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, an educator and Soka Gakkai's founding president. The project, implemented in over 100 Panamanian schools to date, promulgates a learning method for children drawing on their interests and intellectual curiosity. The curriculum instills a spirit of cooperation and awareness of the environment through activities such as cultivating produce and making items out of recycled goods. The participants learned to fold origami, how to prepare nutritional meals and make handicrafts, as well as receiving interactive instruction on teaching children self-respect, humanistic principles, communication skills and value creation.
