Diadema Regional Education Board, Brazil, Recognizes SGI's Educational Contributions

Diadema Regional Education Board, Diadema City, São Paulo State, Brazil, supervises the curricula and programs of the city's public elementary through high schools. In Diadema, five out of 67 public schools have been implementing the Makiguchi Education Project, developed by the SGI-Brazil (BSGI) Education Division, based on the ideas of first Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. Teachers and staff from all 67 schools have participated in education seminars hosted by the BSGI Education Division, to date. The São Paulo State Education Department, in collaboration with UNESCO, is also promoting "Family School Program" in 3,500 schools in the state, as a part of the state project to enhance the quality of education and foster capable youth. Schools are open to the public on weekends, so that students, parents and community are able to collaborate on cultural and educational events.

In recognition of BSGI's educational activities, including the Makiguchi Education Project, and SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's leadership of the SGI, Diadema Regional Education Board recently commended Mr. Ikeda. The conferral took place on October 2, during the BSGI Diamade Region's music festival. A BSGI representative received a certificate, on Mr. Ikeda's behalf, from Board Chair Maria Carmen de Paula Freitas.
