SGI-USA Educators and Students at Columbia University Cohost Symposium

Panelists at symposium

On June 10, the SGI-USA Educators Division and Student Division at Columbia University cohosted a symposium at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, USA. Some 76 educators and students attended the event, which commemorated the ninth anniversary of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's lecture on "Education for Global Citizenship" at the university (June 13, 1996). Panelists included: Monte Joffee, SGI-USA Education Department head and principal at Renaissance Charter School in New York City; and Mitsuko Matsumoto, first graduate of Soka University of America, Aliso Viejo, who enters Teachers College this autumn. Mr. Joffee emphasized that first Soka Gakkai President and educator Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's belief that education is for the happiness of each student is a central ideal of education for fostering global citizens. Representatives shared their experiences of implementing Soka education in their classrooms and schools.
