On December 13, 2004, Dr. Larry A. Hickman, director of the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University, USA, lectured on "John Dewey and Soka Education" at the SGI-USA Friendship Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Hickman referred to the commonalities between Dewey and Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the founder of Soka Education. He also discussed their views on education that emphasized the importance of contact with each student; education outside classroom; communication among school, society and family; and education based on experience. He said Dewey and Makiguchi shared a deep understanding of value-creating education.
