On July 26, 2009, SGI-USA members from in and around Chicago, Illinois, held a summer festival; more than 2,000 attended. SGI-USA Women's Leader Linda Johnson opened the event with introductory remarks and an explanation of Nichiren Buddhism.

The festival included live music from twelve groups that showcased their diverse talents, performing everything from folk music and spoken word to jazz. Several exhibitions were displayed, including SGI-USA's "Victory Over Violence" (VOV) exhibition, a youth-sponsored initiative to help young people identify and counteract the root causes of violence in their daily lives.

In addition, a children's tent featured face painting, arts and crafts, a puppet show and a bounce house. For guests interested in learning more about Nichiren Buddhism, introductory seminars were held throughout the day.
