From September 7-10, 2009, "Beyond the Horizon," an exhibition of photographs taken by the Hato-kai, a group of Soka Gakkai members working on ocean-going vessels, was shown at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana. RMU is a specialized organ of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA).

Ghana is the 11th country to host the exhibition since its first showing in 1994. This marks the first time the exhibition was shown in Africa, which came about through the urging of the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA)—cosponsors of the event.

The show included 68 photographs taken by seafarers on their voyages and at ports of call, in addition to 10 photographs from "Dialogue with Nature," SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's collection of photos depicting scenes from nature.

Ghana's Deputy Minister of Transport, Mrs. Dzifa Ativor, attended the official opening on September 7 as a guest and commented on the profound humanity and love for the sea that was expressed in the photographs and that she felt the show contributed to the realization of peace and international friendship.
