This year, 2008, marks the 30th anniversary of the Japan-China Peace and Friendship Treaty as well as the 40th anniversary of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's proposal calling for the normalization of the diplomatic relations between China and Japan.

On August 16, 2008, Soka Gakkai youth representatives welcomed a youth delegation from China at the Min-On Culture Center in Shinanomachi, Tokyo. The Chinese youth also attended the Japan-China Youth Arts Exchange Festival, in commemoration of Japan-China Youth Friendship Exchange Year. The event provided opportunities for younger generations of China and Japan to create friendships and mutual understanding through cultural performances. Soka Gakkai's Fuji Junior High School Students Chorus sang in Chinese and Japanese. The Chinese youth performed traditional Chinese dances, folk songs and Japanese popular songs.

Hu Ke, leader of the Chinese delegation and also deputy director of the Art Service Center of China's Ministry of Culture, expressed his appreciation for Mr. Ikeda's pioneering and continuous contributions to promote friendship between China and Japan through cultural exchanges. Following remarks from Min-On President Hiroyasu Kobayashi, all the participants sang the Chinese song "Great Sea, My Sweet Home."

Also during the exchange, Mr. Hu; Wang Xuehong, director of the Culture and Art Department, Beijing Chinese and Foreign Cultural and Art Exchange Association; and Peking University Professor Jia Zuixuan were each presented with Min-On Award of Culture.
